About the Building: Commissioned by polio vaccine pioneer Jonas Salk and designed by Louis I. Kahn, the Salk Institute opened in 1965 as a sanctuary where science and beauty could coexist. Kahn's defining gesture was the open travertine courtyard — bisected by a slender water channel that appears to flow straight into the Pacific Ocean. The flanking concrete laboratory towers were poured with obsessive precision; Kahn permitted no grinding, filling, or painting of the finished surface. Pre-stressed concrete Vierendeel trusses span 65-foot column-free research floors.
